Maritime Trades

Snapshots of real people in their workplaces

A Workforce Development Project

Jefferson County, WA is a hot spot for maritime talent, innovation, and mastery of trades skills. It is also an educational mecca with a woodworking school, boat building school, NW Maritime center, Port Townsend Marine Science Center, as well as hosting a massage school, art school, Peninsula College, Centrum, and a wide range of workshops, classes and festivals.

Inspired to photograph our tradespeople, Ashlyn Brown has compiled a catalog of many of our trades, featuring some of our younger trades people. If 14 to 25 year old students and young adults are looking for a pathway to more than just a paycheck, the trades and more specifically, maritime trades, may capture their interest and that is what this visually dynamic publication aims to do; inspire.

This 80 page magazine is just the beginning. Every page includes an individual’s pathway to the work they do and there are selected definitions, a glossary, and an entry-points chart as a launchpad to explore learning and employment opportunities. 10% discount on the list price until December 31st 2025

ABOUT ASHLYN E. BROWN

Ashlyn Brown studied art and ended up on boats. As a teen she learned to sail in St. Croix, USVI and then pursued a career in fashion design at VCU after art school at NCSA. Missing nature after a stint in Tokyo, she found herself on a large sailboat. She cruised the Caribbean, Atlantic, Med and Pacific logging over 80,000 miles at sea over a 20 year span. During that time, besides participating in the multiple refits and maintenance of the boat, she co-hosted charters, assistant managed other yacht refits and ran a small yacht brokerage.

Ashlyn & Russell Brown established Port Townsend Watercraft in 2009 in Port Townsend WA.

In 2021, they partnered with Chesapeake Light Craft for the expanded sales and production of the PT 11 nesting dinghy and the non-nesting PT SPEAR. Ashlyn currently manages the PT Watercraft business, graphic design and web presence as well as assists in the production of the many small custom kit parts and ultra light sailing rigs for PT 11 dinghies. She served on the board of the Port Townsend Marine Trades Association for 8 years and during the pandemic, worked at the local Chamber of Commerce helping businesses navigate lock-down safety and directive impacts. Taking time to sail around the San Juans, Canada, and Port Townsend Bay remains a favorite pastime.

Author and editor of several books, the Maritime Trades workforce development book was inspired by witnessing the amazing concentration of skilled trades people working in the Port of Port Townsend and county wide. Ashlyn wants to build support for the trades as a valuable and rewarding life choice. In a world increasingly without human contact or hands-on skills, Ashlyn firmly believes the trades build a person’s independence and conscientious problem solving abilities while earning a living wage.
